The Northgate (formerly known as Ounce House) was acquired by The Chestnut Group in January 2015.
The property, formerly two townhouses, was built around 1870 on an area of land known as “Mrs Lemons Pasture” – close to Northgate Street. Thankfully we’ve managed to re-create some of this pasture with our garden and terrace, a truly unique space in the town centre.
The Norman grid of streets (North, South, East and West) has survived intact and is still evident today. Bury St Edmunds is a historic market town, a gem of historical interest dominated by the town centre Abbey.
Ounce House was well known throughout the town, having been run by the Pott family as a bed and breakfast for almost twenty years until 2014. Following an extensive refurbishment through 2015 and 2016, The Northgate opened in November 2016 and has quickly become recognised as the “go-to” cocktail bar, along with its wonderful restaurant and deeply comfortable bedrooms.
The building has been sympathetically designed to incorporate the cocktail bar, dining room, Chef’s table overlooking the garden and terrace, private meeting room and ten spectacular en-suite bedrooms.
The Northgate is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Our regional menu (“Taste of East Anglia”) is inspired by seasonal produce and we take our cue from our trusted local suppliers. Our bar staff are practised at creating innovative cocktails from our extensive range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks – boasting some of the tastiest homemade cordials as well as superb Kenyan coffee.
